  • I'm caring for my dad in our home. Is there any programs for him that he can take part in at Northwood that will give me a break?

There is. If your Dad has Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinsons or other related dementia we have Adult Day programs in Bedford (at Ivany Place) and at our Halifax location as well. What Adult Day programs do is that they give you a place to drop off your loved one while a team of programmers take care of him. They also have full-day and half-day options. If you want help inside of your home (along with a drop-off program), we have a number of sensors available to help you keep an eye on your Dad and give you peace of mind through our Intouch service. We also offer homecare as well.
  • What is the difference between care and living in apartments?

There are some differences between living in care and living in apartments, both of which Northwood provides. For independent apartment living, you can apply on your own through Northwood indicating whether you want apartments or assisted living, which has a number of services included in the cost of rent. See our Retirement Living section...

For living in care at Northwood, whether it is at our Halifax or Bedford location, the process is much different. You must contact the Department of Health- Continuing Care branch for an assessment. They will send a Care Coordinator to assess the level of care you or your loved one needs and you will then be put on the waiting list until living accomodations are available. The province determines admissions into care, not Northwood, but you are able to tour a number of care facilities to indicate a preference. For more information on admissions into care please contact the Continuing Care Branch of the Department of Health at 1-800-225-7225 or online at http://www.gov.ns.ca/health/ccs. If you're on the waiting list and want to take a tour, please call our Client Services Department at 454-3356.
